Utility Box

I painted this utility box in La Jolla, California, sponsored by UCSD, to honor the neighborhood spirit in the area. I wanted to combine the idea of “shared wall living” so common in the La Jolla Village and University City area with the many local boutiques and eateries that line downtown La Jolla. This rendering depicts a facade of three buildings with windows that look in on rough sketches of living spaces, shops, and a bakery. This project was especially fun because I could be outside while painting, but one of the most enjoyable parts was being on the street and talking to people who were passing by. I had many people pull over in their cars to ask questions or just talk about the project. I love that this piece is seen by so many people everyday.

This is the finished utility box located near La Jolla Village Square. The artwork is whimsical and depicts three buildings: 1) the left building is a residence looking into the dining room on the second floor, with a bakery on the ground floor; 2) the middle building features a boutique on the ground floor; and 3) the last building on the right is a residence with a large staircase leading to the doorway.

Here is a side profile of the utility box showing a palm tree and the side of the right building.
